Leaving all the faithful in a state of tremendous shock Archbishop of Chittagong Most Rev. Moses M. Costa, CSC passed away this morning (13 July 2020, Monday) at 09:20 am in Square Hospital, Dhaka. He was 69 years old at the time of his death. Chittagong Archdiocese is now without a shepherd! The whole Christian community of Bangladesh especially the faithful of Chittagong Diocese is under deep sorrow and pain.
Tomorrow 14 July 2020, Tuesday his dead body will be kept at ‘Our Lady of Holy Rosary Cathedral Church’ Bandel Road, Patherghata, Chittagong for the the people of all class to pay the last respect to Archbishop Moses. He will be buried in the graveyard adjacent to Cathedral Church after a Holy Mass at 03.30 pm.
It was 13th June 2020 when Archbishop Moses was admitted to square hospital with severe respiratory distress and cough. He was also suffering from fever and weakness for previous few weeks. Until 7th July 2020 he was recovering well and the medical board and his physicians were very optimistic about his release from the hospital. But his health condition drastically deteriorated since then and on 9th July 2020 he was transferred to ICU again where he drew his last breath today. According to the medical board he died of multiple strokes caused by brain haemorrhage.
Most Rev. Moses M. Costa, CSC was appointed as the bishop of Chittagong on 6 April 2011 and his installation ceremony took place on 27 May 2011. Before Chittagong he served as the bishop of Dinajpur Diocese for more than 15 years (1996-2011). In 2017 when Chittagong was elevated to Archdiocese Archbishop Moses Costa was appointed as the 1st Archbishop of Chittagong by His Holiness Pope Francis.
In his life he was a faithful servant of God; a confident, humble, farsighted and bold personality. He worked tirelessly in the development of Chittagong and previously Dinajpur diocese. He established several health centers, educational institutions, charitable organizations and many other non-profit organizations. His death is a great loss for Christian community as well as whole Bangladesh. His death is a irrecoverable loss for all of us. Let us pray that his his soul rest in eternal peace!
